Freelancing 101

Panelists include:

  • Dale Brumfielda has been a freelance writer, artist and publisher in Richmond since 1978. He is the author of eight books and contributes to numerous publications, including the Staunton News Leader, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond Magazine, Style Weekly, North of the James magazine, the Richmond Free Press, the Austin (Texas) Chronicle, the Detroit Free Press and USA Today. In 2016 and 2017, he had exactly 100 freelance articles published.
  • Robert C. Powell III is the editor of Virginia Business magazine. He is responsible for all editorial content in the magazine, its website and all related publications. Powell works with half a dozen freelancers each month. He has more than 35 years of journalism experience, including 27 years as a business reporter and editor at Richmond daily newspapers. 
  • Samantha Willis is an award-winning freelance journalist focusing on art, culture, history and African-American life. Willis contributes to Richmond Magazine, Style Weekly, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Virginia Living and the Richmond Free Press. Additionally, she’s an instructor at Richmond Young Writers Center, teaching creative writing to teens. Willis is co-creator of #UnmaskingRVA, and is currently partnering with Virginia Humanities on the next iteration of the learning series, debuting in Charlottesville Virginia, this summer.
  • Alumnus Jonathan Howard (B.S.'08/MC) is a market news specialist with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Howard is a freelance contributor to the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Richmond Suburban Newspapers sports sections where he primarily covers high school sports and writes the 804 Ballers basketball feature during the college season. He has also contributed to such newspapers as The Washington Post, The Virginian-Pilot and the Daily Press.
  • Joan Tupponce is an award-winning writer for a variety of national and regional publications including O (Oprah), AmericanWay, Delta Sky, US Airways Magazine, Seventeen, AAA World, New York Daily News, Virginia Living, Virginia Business and Virginia Golfer. She has also written articles for Richmond Magazine and Richmond Family Magazine as well as the public relations area of Sports Illustrated.
