Wilder School February Alumni Virtual Lunch and Learn

Join the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs for a Lunch and Learn Zoom presentation about economic recovery related to the pandemic featuring William Spriggs, Ph.D., professor of economics, Howard University, and chief economist, AFL-CIO.

Benjamin Teresa, Ph.D., assistant professor in the urban and regional studies/planning program and co-director of the RVA Eviction Lab, moderates the session, and Wilder School Dean Susan Gooden, Ph.D., provides opening remarks. The event will be recorded and shared later through email and the Wilder School YouTube channel.

About the speaker

William Spriggs​, Ph.D.,​ is a professor and former chair of the Department of Economics at Howard University and serves as chief economist to the AFL-CIO. In his role with the AFL-CIO, he chairs the Economic Policy Working Group for the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and serves on the board of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He was the 2016 recipient of the National Academy of Social Insurance’s Robert M. Ball Award for Outstanding Achievements in Social Insurance and the 2014 NAACP Benjamin L. Hooks​ Keeper of the Flame​ Award. From 2009-12, Spriggs​​​​​ served as assistant secretary for the Office of Policy at the U.S. Department of Labor, having been appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. He is a former president of the National Economics Association, the organization of America’s professional Black economists, and is a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance and the National Academy of Public Administration. He graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts​ ​and holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
