RVA Active Aging Week

Sept. 22 - Sept. 27, 2014

The VCU Department of Gerontology, the Arthritis Foundation and Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging are participating in Active Aging Week which is a weeklong celebration of seniors in the community who are taking a proactive approach to health and wellness at every age. This year’s theme is “Let the Adventure Begin” and we are encouraging everyone to create their own adventure Sept. 22-27. We have numerous events throughout the week taking place all over the Greater Richmond region.

Our Kickoff event “Ramping Up Workplace Activity” presented by Sports Backers, features a workshop for businesses and organizations to engage in Active RVA either through a stairwell initiative and/or a certified “active” business. Farmer Brown’s Mobile Market, LLC, will also be on site to bring us local and fresh foods! This event is open to the public and will take place at Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging, at 10 a.m. Sept. 22.

Our closing event is just as exciting! We will be celebrating Active Aging Week with an Open House featuring regional Age Wave progress and keynote speaker: Commissioner James Rothrock (M.S.'78/AHP), Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services. Think sweatbands and Olivia Newton John’s "Let’s Get Livable" led by our Active Aging Week chair, DARS staff, community partners, and Age Wave Coalition members. We will also have exhibits on display including: Virginia Livable Communities and Elders are our Superheroes with William Fox Elementary students. This is a free event and open to the public. It will be held 3-5 p.m. at Health South Rehabilitation Hospital.

Active Aging Week is a partnership between Arthritis Foundation, VCU's Department of Gerontology and Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging. We encourage everyone to go Like our Facebook page or contact agingstudies@vcu.edu for more information.
