Membership FAQ

Read our brochure explaining the new VCU Alumni.

Q. What is VCU Alumni?
A. A new umbrella organization providing coordination and support for an alliance of alumni constituent organizations (academic, geographic and shared interest). VCU Alumni is designed to allow alumni to be in charge of their relationship with their alma mater by encouraging them to identify and choose primary and additional affiliations that mean the most to them.

Q. Why are we changing to VCU Alumni now?
A.
As VCU continues to grow and to graduate more and more students, this model of alumni engagement provides more opportunities for increased alumni engagement where alumni can choose how to connect. Although the current alumni engagement model yielded a 25 percent increase in dues-paying members in the past four years, compared with less than 1 percent growth in the previous four years, alumni and the university want to encourage far greater alumni participation to meet the aspirations of the university’s strategic plan, Quest for Distinction.

Q. What is a primary affiliation?
A.
A primary affiliation is a constituent organization of alumni based on shared academic affiliation. Our eminent alumni constituent organizations -- the MCV Alumni Association of VCU and the RPI Alumni organization -- also are primary academic affiliation choices. Every dues-paying member can select one primary affiliation and should anticipate a higher level of engagement with this group through communications, activities, etc.

Q. What is an additional affiliation?
A.
Choosing additional alumni constituent organization affiliations provide alumni with outlets for increased engagement. Some alumni want to connect with more than one academic affiliation and many prefer to connect with the university and other alumni through both academic and nonacademic avenues. Additional affiliations provide the opportunity for you to join other alumni in these affiliations or help initiate new affiliation opportunities. Additional affiliations are grouped under three categories -- academic, geographic and shared interest.

Q. What does choosing affiliation with a primary academic constituent organization mean for me?
A.
By choosing affiliation with a primary academic constituent organization you are indicating your interest in being more closely connected with other alumni who share your primary affiliation and the academic area that you and other alumni have selected. You should anticipate a higher level of engagement with this group through communications, activities, etc.

Q. What does choosing affiliation with an additional constituent organization mean for me?
A.
By choosing affiliation with one or more additional (academic, geographic, shared interest) constituent organization you are indicating your interest in being more closely connected with other alumni who share your selected affiliation(s). You should anticipate a higher level of engagement with this group through communications, activities, etc.

Q. What happens if I don't choose to do anything?
A.
If you are a current, active dues-paying member and you do not do anything, your primary affiliation will be aligned with VCU Alumni (for previous VCU Alumni Association members) or the MCV Alumni Association for those previous members.

Q. What do I do if I don’t see a primary affiliation I would like to join?
A.
Contact us and we can help you determine if other alumni share your interest in establishing a new primary academic constituent organization. If they do, then VCU Alumni staff will help you organize a new group.

Q. Why isn’t my school or other academic department listed as a primary constituent organization?
A.
If your school or academic area isn't listed as a primary affiliation that means a group is not currently organized and active. Contact us and we can help you determine if other alumni share your interest in establishing a new primary academic constituent organization. If they do, then VCU Alumni staff will try to help you get one going.

Q. What is the status of the VCU Alumni Association?
A.
Since the former organization known as the VCU Alumni Association only represented Monroe Park Campus alumni, it is no longer an active organization under the VCU Alumni umbrella.

Q. What is the status of the MCV Alumni Association?
A.
Since the MCVAA was founded to represent alumni from one of two predecessor institutions to the establishment of VCU in 1968, it and the RPI Alumni constituent organization have been designated as eminent constituent organizations under the VCU Alumni umbrella. MCVAA is an option for alumni to choose as a primary or additional affiliation.

Q. Can I choose more than one primary affiliation?
A.
You can choose only one primary affiliation, but you can select as many additional affiliations as you would like.
