What is Google Apps at VCU?

Google Apps at VCU provides a VCU gateway to Google's online services. This allows you to take advantage of Google's email, productivity and collaboration tools using a @alumni.vcu.edu email address powered by Google's easy-to-use Gmail service.

How do I check my @alumni.vcu.edu email?

To check your @alumni.vcu.edu email, visit www.vcualumni.org/alumniemail. You cannot access this account through google.com or gmail.com.

Can I consolidate my personal (non-@alumni.vcu.edu) email account and my @alumni.vcu.edu email account or set a forward from one to the other?

Are spam filters in place?

Yes, automatic spam filters move probable spam to a folder named SPAM. You can find an email in the folder and mark it as "not spam" so future mail from that sender will then go into your inbox. You can also mark mail that has passed the filter as spam, and all future mails from that sender will go into the spam folder. In the folders section located on the left-hand side of the screen, you will see folders for "follow up" "miscellaneous" and "priority" then "4 more" with a down arrow. Click on the arrow to expand, showing the spam and trash folders.

Will I be able to keep my e-mail address after I graduate from VCU?

Your myVCUmail account will continue to work indefinitely after you graduate. You do not need to notify anyone that you intend to keep using it. As of June 2010, the new @alumni.vcu.edu service is being offered. Alumni email addresses are created on a request only basis and the @alumni.vcu.edu account is separate from the mymail.vcu.edu account. Currently, Google does not provide a service to merge or move email between domains (e.g., from mymail.vcu.edu to alumni.vcu.edu). If such a service becomes available, we will post the availability of such a service.

Yes. A growing list of institutions are using third-party email service providers, including University of Virginia, Indiana University, the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern and Arizona State, for their students.

Will my privacy be protected by private email vendors?

Google is committed to protecting your privacy. The security that is provided to Google Apps (which includes VCU's email system) customers is the same security that Google relies on to protect www.google.com (http://www.google.com).
