Mini Med School: The New Look of Medical Education

8:15 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. April 16, 2016

MINI-MEDICAL SCHOOL: THE NEW LOOK OF MEDICAL EDUCATION 8:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Join us in the McGlothlin Medical Education Center (MMEC), located at 1201 E. Marshall St. (the corner of 12th and Marshall streets), for an overview of what your medical school looks like today.


Plan to take the MCV Campus Reunion shuttle from the Omni (the first drop-off is at West Hospital, one block south of the MMEC). Or, if you are arriving by car, parking is available on Saturday in the N Deck at the corner of Leigh and 10th streets. Street parking is also available on Ninth and 10th streets and is free on weekends. You can stay for all the sessions or drop in at any time.


8:15-9 a.m.: Breakfast Buffet, MMEC Lobby Sponsored by the medical division of the MCV Alumni Association.


9-9:45 a.m.: Dean’s state of the School of Medicine address, MMEC Learning Theater School of Medicine Dean Jerry Strauss, M.D., Ph.D., will provide an update on the medical school and discuss the school’s strengths, its areas of greatest need and how the school is changing. This session will give an overview of the latest developments at the School of Medicine through the dean’s eyes. Dean Strauss will welcome questions.


9:45-10 a.m.: Break


10-10:30 a.m.: Admissions 101, MMEC Learning Theater Hear from our admissions office about what it’s like to apply to medical school today. Learn how many students apply, how schools compete for top students and how top students compete for scholarships. Think back on what your credentials looked like when you applied to medical school and then hear about the credentials of some of today’s students.


10:30-10:45 a.m.: Specialty Career Track, MMEC Learning Theater In response to the oft-referenced bottleneck for limited residency spots, the School of Medicine has developed a four-year comprehensive careeradvising program. Learn how our newly designed curriculum helps our students better prepare for their training and careers. This program helps students every step of the way toward getting matched to their ideal residency.


10:45-11 a.m: Break


11-11:30 a.m.: A New Curriculum, MMEC, fifth floor The School of Medicine has launched a new curriculum. Explore how team-based learning has changed the classroom and hear about the latest technology in our learning studios.
11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety Tours, MMEC, ninth and 10th floors The center offers 26,000 square feet of simulation space used by medical students, residents, faculty and other health care personnel. Try for yourself how we use the latest technology and standardized patients to enhance the educational experience. It’s no longer, “See One, Do One, Teach One.” Training is interprofessional and hands-on with demonstrated competency requirements. The center’s mission is to improve safety outcomes and quality of care through the use of clinical simulation in education and research. 


Noon-1:30 p.m.: Lunch Buffet, MMEC Lobby $10
