Everything you want to know about serving on a board: A Panel Q&A

Serving on a board can be incredibly rewarding, both for the community or corporation, and in building your network. This one hour q&a with board members will demystify access to local, appointed, corporate and university board opportunities, what to expect, and how to get the most of your experience.

 

Moderator:

Myra Goodman Smith is the President and CEO of Leadership Metro Richmond (LMR), our region’s community leadership development and engagement organization. Myra has a diverse range of management and leadership experience, serving for more than 30 years in the nonprofit sector. She has created and led governance workshops and training programs for nonprofit leaders and boards of directors.  Throughout her life, Myra has been engaged in our communities, serving on various commissions, boards and councils, including as Board Chair of a multi-state health nonprofit. Today, she serves on the advisory board of VCU LEAD and as Board Chair of the Jenkins Foundation, a multi-million dollar health legacy foundation.  Recently, Myra was recognized as a Living Legend by Richmond Public Schools received the Outstanding Women Award from the YWCA for Nonprofit Leadership and recognized as a Person of the Year by the Richmond Times-Dispatch Myra holds a bachelor's degree in Urban Studies and Planning and a Master of Public Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a graduate of Leadership Metro Richmond Class of 2006. 

Panelists:

Andrew Coulomb, Chief Operating Officer at Capital Jewish Museum

  • Andrew Coulomb is a museum professional that currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer at the soon-to-be built Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC. He previously served as Director of Operations at The Valentine and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, and as Deputy Director and Interim Executive Director at the Virginia Holocaust Museum. He has worked with boards for the majority of his career and is a board member of the Virginia Association of Museums, and a current VCU Alumni Recent Graduate Council Member. He is also a tremendous advocate for the role of museums in building and sustaining communities. He received his Bachelors degree in History from VCU in 2011.

Megan Rollins, President and CEO of Boaz & Ruth, Inc.

  • Megan Rollins, skilled in organizational management, is the President and CEO of Boaz & Ruth. She brings over 15 years of hands-on experience in volunteer management, event planning, and operations. Prior to working at Boaz & Ruth, Megan began her career in the kitchen and bath design industry at REICO Kitchen and Bath.  She gained nonprofit experience at Boaz & Ruth as a volunteer, volunteer coordinator, AmeriCorps Director and Chief Operations Officer prior to taking on the responsibilities of President and CEO. A graduate of Mary Baldwin College, Megan holds a Certificate in Nonprofit Management and a Master’s in Public Administration from VCU. She is a 2015 graduate of Leadership Metro Richmond, received the 2012 Stettinius Award for Nonprofit Leadership and was named the Greater Richmond Volunteer Administrator of the Year for 2011. She is a graduate of the Emerging Nonprofit Leadership Program and Richmond Christian Leadership Initiative. 

Edward McCoy, President and CEO of Eaheart Industrial Service, Inc

  • Ed McCoy is the President and CEO of Eahart Industrial Service, Inc and is a current appointed member of the VCU Board of Visitors. Mr. McCoy has served on the Mayor’s Advisory Board, the board of directors for the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the board of directors for Richmond Renaissance.  He served on the board of directors for Maggie L. Walker Governors School and was a governor-appointed commissioner for the Virginia Housing Development Association board.  He received his BS from the VCU School of Business in 1986.
